At just over 40 years old, Gelfand is the elder statesman of the Grand Prix. However, given his consistently high performance level over the past twenty years it is not clear that the accumulated wealth of experience has any less value than his relatively “old” age. Gelfand will be looking for a breakthrough performance in Jermuk to move up in the Grand Prix standings, possibly motivated by the memory of world champion Tigran Petrosian, on the occasion of his former trainer’s 80th anniversary here in Armenia.
